Blows Against the Empire

The Cathedral and the Bazaar paper has had some real-world consequences. The day of the announcement I was informed by the folks at Netscape that it was a major influence on their decision to give away the source for Netscape Communicator.

Eric Hahn, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Netscape, wrote me four days afterwards confirming: "On behalf of everyone at Netscape, I want to thank you for helping us get to this point in the first place. Your thinking and writings were fundamental inspirations to our decision."

The following week I flew out to Silicon Valley for a day-long strategy conference (on Feb 4 1998) with some of Netscape's top executives and technical people. We designed Netscape's source-release strategy and license together, and laid some more plans that we hope will eventually have far-reaching and positive impacts on the open source community.

While in the Valley I also consulted with Linus Torvalds and other leaders in the Linux community. We believe the time is ripe for a major push into the commercial world. We've got the technology; and now, after the Netscape announcement and with Netscape's active backing, we're getting visibility and credibility.

Media coverage is beginning to build. See this 4 Feb 98 story from the San Francisco Chronicle for an early sample.

Stay tuned. This story isn't over -- in fact, it's barely begun.
